In high I have always faced problems with citation because I didn’t know how to put my evidence in MLA citation format, as a result most of the time I have been charged with plagiarism. This semester my classmates and I were introduced more in details to the MLA source citation format. Our Instructor Mr. Moberly provided us with websites, blogs, Government documents, and Magazine and newspapers articles in our course readings that relate to Proposition 37 the topic that we wrote our research paper about. The reading responses and the source annotations helped me a lot in overcoming this challenge because to do those assignments we had to identify the author and the title of the source and for the reference we had to identify who the source was published by, the web, last dates edited and last date accessed. This process helped me distinguish between reliable and unreliable sources and made citation easier for me to do. Also, in my Proposition 37 research paper I learned how to include outside evidence in my writing and then use in text citation to prevent plagiarism. After taking this course now I feel more confident in doing a research paper since now I’m able to use dependable and trustworthy sources in my writing. Also, I learned how to pull out important quotes and examples from a text and then cite it using a discipline-appropriate citation formats such as the MLA format that we used throughout the semester.
